Pratt & Whitney Externals Engineering seeks a motivated, detail-oriented Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join the design team. Working on inter-disciplinary teams, the selected candidate will perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, air management plumbing and electrical and harness systems hardware. This position requires creative design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low-cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements. External hardware includes a vast and challenging array of parts including tubes, brackets, electrical harnesses, and component mounts. The Externals designer routinely interfaces with virtually every module on a PW gas turbine engine as well as integration of different systems on the engine including lubrication, electrical, fuel and air systems.
All design work will utilize UG NX solid modeling as well as other modeling and analysis tools. The candidate will work with other disciplines including structures, project, and product definition. Opportunities are available in the development military program area.
What You Will Do:
- Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.
- Understand technical processes and design requirements of gas turbine externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets and electrical harnesses.
- Learn and apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.
- Utilize standard work and CORE/ACE tools to continuously improve the externals design process.
- Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc.).
- Ability to negotiate design criteria/space with other groups including internal as well as external customers.
- Ability to complete complex tolerance stacks for fit/function.
- Travel up to 25 (Domestic).
Qualifications You Must Have:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 8 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience in engine hardware arrangement and packaging, or an Advanced degree in Engineering with 5 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience in engine hardware arrangement and packaging.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued DOD Secret security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Proven communication and teaming skills to provide direction to achieve team goals.
- Interface effectively with both internal and external customers.
- Experience with 3D CAD solid modeling (NX) and PLM software (Teamcenter).
- Strong hands-on ability to creatively solve technical problems and create design solutions with minimal direction.
- Experience performing new Mechanical Systems gas turbine engine hardware development.
- Experience with GD&T.
- Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance before start date.
What We Offer:
- Relocation: Eligible for Relocation.
- Work Schedule: The standard work schedule applies, with an option to adopt a 9/80 schedule if preferred.
